Smoke Chamber Problems: The Part of the Chimney Nobody Sees

The smoke chamber is the funnel-shaped space directly above your fireplace damper that narrows up into the flue. It is the part of the chimney that almost never gets looked at, because you cannot see it from the firebox without a mirror or a camera and it is buried inside the masonry above the mantel. Problems there fall into three groups: rough, stepped brickwork that traps creosote and wrecks draft; cracks, gaps, and missing mortar that let heat and gas reach the framing; and damage to the smoke shelf and damper area that lets water and debris pile up.

Most of the smoke chambers we inspect in older Seattle, Tacoma, and Shoreline homes have at least one of those issues. The fix is usually a process called parging: coating the inside of the chamber with a refractory mortar to seal it and smooth it. It is one of the most effective repairs a masonry fireplace can get, and one of the least known. Here is what goes wrong in there and how to tell if yours needs attention.

Where the smoke chamber is and what it does

Picture the path smoke takes. It leaves the fire, rises through the damper opening, and then has to get from a wide, shallow firebox into a flue that is much smaller. The smoke chamber is the transition. Its walls should slope inward smoothly, like an upside-down funnel, so the rising gases speed up and flow cleanly into the flue. At the bottom of the chamber, behind the damper, is the smoke shelf, a flat ledge that catches downdrafts and anything that falls down the flue.

A well-built smoke chamber does three things: it accelerates the smoke so the fireplace drafts properly, it keeps heat and gases contained inside the masonry, and it resists the heat of a fire directly below it. When any of those fails, you get a fireplace that smokes, a chimney that builds creosote faster than it should, or a heat path to the wood framing around the chimney.

Problem 1: corbeled, unparged brick

In many chimneys built through the mid-1900s, the smoke chamber was formed by corbeling: each course of brick was stepped inward a little further than the one below, leaving a staircase of exposed brick edges and mortar joints on the inside. Sometimes the builder then parged over the steps with mortar to create a smooth slope. Often they did not, or the parging has since fallen away.

Tacoma's median home was built in 1967 and Shoreline's in 1969, so a large part of the fireplace stock we work on falls into this era. An unparged, stepped chamber causes two problems. Every ledge is a shelf for creosote to collect on, and the turbulence from the steps slows the smoke so more of it condenses on the walls. And every mortar joint and brick edge is a place where heat can work through to whatever is on the other side of the masonry. Current practice under NFPA 211, the standard that governs chimneys and fireplaces, calls for smooth, parged smoke chamber walls, and that is what a repair brings an older chamber up to.

Problem 2: cracks, gaps, and missing mortar

The smoke chamber sits right above the fire. It takes more heat than any part of the chimney except the firebox itself, and it takes it from the very first minute of every fire while the masonry is still cold. Decades of that expansion and contraction open up mortar joints. A chimney fire does it in one afternoon.

Water makes it worse. Rain that gets past a missing or failed cap runs the full length of the flue and lands in the smoke chamber and on the smoke shelf. Sea-Tac's NOAA normals put November at 6.31 inches of rain and the October-through-March wet season at about 29.65 inches, roughly 73 percent of the year's total. That water soaks into the mortar of the chamber. Seattle sees about 60 days a year that touch 32F, so the wet mortar freezes and thaws repeatedly, and the Brick Industry Association documents that repeated freeze-thaw of saturated masonry causes cracking and disintegration. The result on camera is open joints, loose brick, and sometimes daylight through to the chimney's outer wall.

Open joints in a smoke chamber are a safety issue, not a cosmetic one. This is the part of the chimney that frequently shares a wall with framing, a closet, or the floor system of the story above. Hot gases escaping through a gap there are escaping into the house structure.

Problem 3: the smoke shelf and damper area

The smoke shelf is where everything that falls down the flue ends up: loose creosote, broken flue tile fragments, bird nesting material, leaves, and rainwater. When it fills up, it blocks the path smoke was supposed to take around the damper, so the fireplace smokes and smells. Wet debris sitting on the shelf keeps the masonry damp all year and produces the sour, smoky odor many Seattle homeowners notice in summer when the house is closed up and humid.

The damper frame itself is often set into the masonry at the front of the chamber. A rusted, warped, or stuck damper, or a damper that has pulled away from its mortar bed, leaves a gap that affects draft and lets more water reach the chamber. How we find smoke chamber problems

From inside the firebox, with the damper open and a strong light, you can sometimes see the lower part of the chamber. What you cannot see is the condition of the upper walls, the back of the damper, or the smoke shelf. A camera chimney inspection is how we evaluate it properly, either by running the camera up from the firebox or down from the top of the flue. A Level 2 inspection, which NFPA 211 recommends when a property is sold or after a chimney fire, includes this view.

Before the camera goes in, the chamber often needs to be cleaned. Heavy creosote on the chamber walls hides cracks, and a shelf full of debris hides the shelf. If the fireplace has been used regularly, a sweep comes first. If the fireplace has sat unused for years and the chamber is packed with debris or nesting material, that is a chimney cleaning job.

What the repair looks like

Parging the chamber

The standard fix for rough, stepped, or lightly cracked chamber walls is parging. We apply a refractory mortar, made to handle the heat of a fire directly below it, over the inside of the chamber, filling the corbel steps and open joints and leaving a smooth, continuous, sloped surface. The parging seals the masonry so gases stay inside, and it gives the smoke a slick path into the flue, which is why a fireplace that smoked for years often drafts noticeably better after the chamber is parged. Depending on access, this is done by hand through the damper opening or with a sprayed refractory product.

Rebuilding damaged areas

When brick is loose or missing, or the chamber has lost its shape, parging alone is not enough. Damaged brick is reset or replaced first, then the chamber is parged. If a chimney fire has done heavy damage through the chamber and the flue above it, the smoke chamber repair gets scheduled together with liner work so the whole gas path is addressed at once.

Clearing and protecting the shelf

We clear the smoke shelf, check that the damper seats and moves properly, and look at the top of the chimney. A missing cap is the most common reason a smoke shelf is full of water and debris, and a new chimney cap is the part of the job that keeps the repair from being needed again.

Signs your smoke chamber needs a look

  • The fireplace smokes into the room, especially when first lit, even though the flue has been swept.
  • A persistent smoky or sour smell from the fireplace in warm, humid weather.
  • Flaky creosote or bits of brick and mortar falling onto the smoke shelf or into the firebox.
  • A damper that is stiff, rusted, or no longer sits flat.
  • The chimney has had a fire, or the liner has cracked tiles, both of which mean the chamber has likely taken the same heat.
  • You are buying an older home in Seattle, Tacoma, or the Eastside with a masonry fireplace and no record of chimney work.
