A factory-built (prefab, zero-clearance) fireplace does not have a brick firebox. Its back and side walls, and often the floor, are lined with refractory panels: molded, cement-like slabs that take the heat of the fire and shield the metal shell and the framing behind it. Those panels crack and crumble with age, and once they pass the point of repair, fireplace panel replacement is the fix: the old panels come out and new panels listed for that fireplace model go in.

Our fireplace panel replacement process
We start by finding the rating plate inside the unit, usually on the side wall behind the screen or under the lower grille, because the model number is what tells us which replacement panels are listed for the fireplace. We then check each panel for crack width, missing material, movement and exposure of the shell behind it, check the floor panel and the grate, and look at the chimney pipe, cap and damper for the water source that so often weakens panels. We also confirm the unit's overall condition is worth new panels.
Identify the fireplace
We read the rating plate, record the manufacturer and model, and confirm which replacement panel set is listed for that unit.

Remove the old panels

- Manufacturer replacement panels: the standard and preferred option. Panels listed for the exact model fit the retainers, match the thickness the unit was tested with, and keep the fireplace's listing intact.
- Universal or cut-to-fit refractory panels: for discontinued models with no factory parts, some units can take panels cut from refractory board of the matching thickness. We only offer this where it fits the unit correctly.
- Partial replacement: if only the back panel has failed and the side panels are sound, we replace what needs replacing.
- Unit replacement: when the shell is rusted, the chimney pipe is failing or no panels are available, putting money into panels is a false economy. We say so and quote a new fireplace through our fireplace installation service.

Safety considerations
The refractory panels are what keep the fire's heat from reaching the metal shell and the wood framing that surrounds a prefab fireplace. A panel cracked through, broken or missing means the shell is taking heat it was not designed to take. Stop using the fireplace until the panels have been evaluated.
Factory-built fireplaces are tested and listed as a complete unit, which is why we install panels listed for the model rather than whatever is the right size. A mismatched panel can change how the unit handles heat. If your prefab fireplace is gas, the same rules apply and we do the work; do not touch the valve, pilot or logs yourself. NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection, which is where most failing panels are found.

Water shortens their life. Sea-Tac's NOAA 1991–2020 normals show 40.34 inches of rain a year, with November the wettest month at 6.31 inches. How do I know if my panels need replacement instead of repair?
The common threshold is a crack you can fit a coin edge into, a panel broken into pieces, a missing corner, or any crack where the metal shell is visible behind it. Those call for replacement. Hairline cracks and shallow chips can often be repaired instead, and our panel repair page explains that option.
Can you get panels for an older or discontinued fireplace?
Often. Many manufacturers still sell panels for models that are decades old, and some older brands have panels available through successor companies. If nothing is available, some units can take refractory board cut to the right thickness. If the unit cannot be safely re-paneled, we tell you that instead of forcing a fit.
Why do the panels have to match the manufacturer?
A factory-built fireplace is tested as a whole unit, panels included. The panel thickness and material are part of how it keeps heat off the shell and the framing. Panels listed for the model keep that protection as designed. A generic panel of the wrong thickness may look fine and still let the shell run hotter than it should.
How long before I can use the fireplace again?
New panels need a cure period before the first fire, and the manufacturer sets it, usually a day or more. After that, a few small fires season the panels before a full-sized fire. We give you the specific timing for your unit when we finish the job.
Do I need a permit to replace fireplace panels?
Replacing panels in an existing listed unit is normally a like-for-like parts replacement. Some work on a fireplace may need a permit depending on the city and the scope of the job, and rules differ across King, Pierce and Snohomish counties; we will tell you if that applies to yours.
