Steilacoom is on the shore of Puget Sound in west Pierce County, below Lakewood and across Cormorant Passage from Ketron and Anderson islands. From Renton we take I-405 to I-5 south, leave the freeway in Lakewood and follow Steilacoom Boulevard west past Fort Steilacoom Park into town, about 45 minutes when traffic is light. Steilacoom was incorporated in 1854, the first town in Washington, and still has houses from the 1850s through the early 1900s with brick chimneys that predate flue liners.
