Even a small mortar repair is done at the top of the roof, so please leave the look-and-poke to us; the free quote includes close-up photos. A loose brick in the top course can come down in a wind storm, so if you have found brick or a large chunk of mortar on the roof or the ground, keep people and vehicles away from that side of the house until we have re-bedded it.
NFPA 211 recommends an annual chimney inspection, and that yearly look is what keeps mortar problems at the spot-repair stage instead of the repointing stage.

When is a spot mortar repair enough, and when is it a false economy?
It is enough when the failed joints are few, confined to one area, and the surrounding mortar is still hard when probed. It is a false economy when the survey finds failing joints across most of the exposed stack, because the patched spots will be surrounded by new failures within a winter or two. We count before we quote and tell you which side you are on.
Can you just fill the crack with caulk or a tube of mortar?
Surface fills fall out, usually within one wet season, because there is nothing behind them to grip. A lasting mortar repair cuts the cracked joint out to sound material, cleans it, and packs new mortar in layers that bond to the brick on three sides. It takes longer than a smear but it stays put for years.
One brick near the top of my chimney is loose. Is that an emergency?
It is urgent rather than an emergency, because a loose top-course brick can come down in wind. Keep people away from that side of the house and call us; same-day service is often available for this. The brick is usually loose because the crown is letting water into its bed, so we check the crown at the same visit.
Will the repaired joints match the rest of the chimney?
