Does Your Fireplace Need a Sweep or a Full Chimney Cleaning?

Every wood fire leaves something behind. Soot and creosote collect on the flue walls, and the longer they sit the harder and more flammable they get. Add a few seasons without service and you can also have leaves, nesting material, broken tile pieces and damp, sour-smelling deposits sitting on the smoke shelf. All of it narrows the flue, slows the draft and raises the chance of a chimney fire. The fix depends on which of these you actually have.

How to tell which sub-problem you have

You probably need a routine chimney sweep if:

• You burn wood regularly and it has been about a year since the last service.
• The fireplace works fine but you see black, flaky or glossy deposits just above the damper.
• You want the annual inspection NFPA 211 recommends done at the same visit.

Red flags that mean stop using the fireplace

• A loud roaring or rumbling sound during a fire, or puffs of dense smoke from the top.
• Cracked or missing flue tiles visible from the firebox.
• Creosote that looks like tar or shiny glaze rather than dust.
