How It Works

On prefab units we identify the manufacturer and check the panels against the maker's replacement threshold. A cracked firebox often has a cause higher up, so we also look at the crown, cap and flue on the same visit.

Clean and rake out

- Firebrick replacement: for bricks that are split through, spalled or loose.

- Firebox rebuild: when most of the bricks or joints have failed, rebuilding the firebox walls is cheaper and safer than chasing cracks one by one.

Safety considerations
A cracked firebox can let flame, heat and combustion gases reach the framing or wall cavity behind the fireplace, and that risk is not visible from the living room. We recommend not using the fireplace until cracks have been evaluated, especially any crack you can fit a fingernail into or any loose brick.
Never fill a firebox crack with ordinary caulk or regular mortar; those products fail at firebox temperatures. If your fireplace is gas, do not touch the valve, logs or pilot; call us instead. NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection, which is how most firebox cracks get caught before they spread.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Firebox cracks around Puget Sound usually have two causes working together: heat cycling and water. Sea-Tac's NOAA 1991–2020 normals put 40.34 inches of rain on the region each year, with November the wettest month at 6.31 inches. Water that gets past a failed crown or cap runs down the flue into the smoke chamber and firebox, soaking the mortar joints from behind.
Seattle sees about 60 days a year that touch 32°F while daytime temperatures thaw, so soaked firebrick and mortar expand and contract repeatedly through the winter, and then the fire heats the same joints from the front. Tacoma's median home was built in 1967 and Seattle's in 1976, so many masonry fireboxes have been through decades of both cycles.

Why did my last crack repair fail?
