Our wood fireplace cleaning process
Cleaning the fireplace is also the best time to look at it closely, and we do. With the ash out we can see the firebox floor and walls, and we check the mortar joints and firebrick for cracks and spalling, the damper for rust, warping and a proper seal, the smoke shelf for debris, and the glass doors and frame for loose gaskets or hinges. Anything we find goes in a short written note with a free quote, and a firebox crack that needs attention is handled under fireplace crack repair, starting at $299. We do not turn a cleaning into a repair without telling you first.
Protect the room
Drop cloths over the hearth and floor, the opening contained, and a HEPA vacuum running so no ash or soot leaves the fireplace.
Remove ash and debris
We shovel and vacuum the firebox, empty the ash dump and ash pit where there is one, and clear the smoke shelf behind the damper.
Clean the firebox
Walls and floor are scraped and brushed to remove creosote drips and baked-on soot, down to the firebrick.
Service the damper
The damper plate and frame are cleaned of flakes and grit, moved through its full travel, and checked for seal.
Clean doors, screen, grate and hearth
Glass is cleaned inside and out, the screen and frame are wiped down, the grate and andirons are de-ashed, and the hearth and surround are cleaned of soot staining.

Safety considerations
Ash can hold live embers for days, so never scoop ash into a plastic bin or a paper bag, and do not use a household vacuum on it; a single ember in a vacuum bag is a house fire. We remove ash with a HEPA unit rated for it and carry it out in a sealed metal container. Do not burn with the glass doors closed unless the doors are rated for it, and keep the damper fully open for every fire. Leave the flue, cap and roof to our certified and insured crew; a fireplace cleaning is indoor work, but the system above it is not something we suggest a homeowner handles.
NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection of any fireplace and chimney in use, which is why we suggest pairing this cleaning with a sweep and inspection once a year.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Seattle fireplaces get a long season. Winter lows at Sea-Tac average around 37°F in December and January, cool enough for nightly fires from fall through spring, and a wet season that delivers about 29.65 inches of precipitation from October through March keeps the flue damp, so ash on the firebox floor absorbs that moisture and turns sour and acidic if it is left sitting.
That damp ash is why fireplaces here smell in the summer, when only about 3.0 inches of rain fall from June through August and the house warms up. Cleaning the firebox out at the end of the burning season, rather than letting a winter's worth of ash sit until October, is the simplest fix.

Wood Fireplace Cleaning FAQ
Is wood fireplace cleaning the same as a chimney sweep?
No. A sweep cleans the flue, the vertical passage above the damper. A wood fireplace cleaning handles everything below it and facing the room: firebox, ash, damper, smoke shelf, glass doors, screen, grate and hearth. The two together make a complete service, and we are happy to do both on one visit. If you only need the flue, book the chimney sweep.
How often should the firebox be cleaned out?
Ash should be kept to an inch or so during the burning season and the firebox fully cleaned at the end of it. Leaving a full season of ash sitting through a damp Puget Sound spring is what creates the sour summer smell and the acidic residue that eats at firebrick mortar. A yearly professional cleaning paired with the sweep covers most households.
Can you get the black haze off my glass doors?
Usually, yes. Baked-on creosote haze on fireplace glass comes off with the right cleaner and patience, and we clean both faces of the glass and the frame. Glass that has been etched by years of neglect may stay slightly cloudy, and we tell you that before we start. Doors that no longer seal are a separate, quoted repair.
My damper is stiff and gritty. Is that part of the cleaning?
Yes. Flakes from the flue fall onto the damper plate and into its frame, and that grit is what makes a damper stiff or stops it closing. We clean the plate and frame and run the damper through its full travel. If it is rusted, warped or the handle is broken, cleaning will not fix it and we quote a damper repair instead.
Do you clean the smoke shelf?
Yes. The smoke shelf is the ledge behind the damper where debris and creosote flakes collect, and it is included in every wood fireplace cleaning. It is also the one spot a homeowner cannot see or reach easily. Will cleaning the fireplace make a mess of my living room?
Not when it is done right. We lay drop cloths across the hearth and floor, contain the opening, and run a HEPA vacuum for the entire job so ash and soot stay in the fireplace and in our equipment, not in the air. We carry ash out in a sealed metal container. The room should look better, not worse, when we leave.
