Creosote is the tar left behind when wood smoke cools and condenses on the inside of a chimney. Every wood fire makes some. The question is never whether your flue has creosote but how much, and which of the three degrees it has reached, because each degree needs a different removal method and carries a different fire risk. This page is the overview: what the three stages are, why they form, what removing each one involves, and which of our narrower pages to read next.
Think of it as a ladder. Stage 1 is loose, dusty soot that a standard brush removes. Stage 2 is shiny, crunchy flakes that need rotary chains or whips. Stage 3 is a hard tar glaze that brushes cannot touch and that may need chemical treatment over more than one visit. A flue moves up the ladder when fires burn cool and wood burns wet, which is exactly how many Puget Sound fireplaces are used.

Symptoms
Signs you need chimney creosote removal
- Black buildup visible on the damper or the first few feet of flue
- A strong campfire or tar smell in the room, worse on humid or rainy days
- Fires that are harder to start or that smoke back into the room
- Black, sticky or shiny drips on the smoke shelf or firebox walls
- Puffy, bubbled or honeycomb-looking deposits above the damper
- A roar, popping or loud ticking from the chimney during a hot fire
- Flakes of black material falling into the firebox between fires

Common causes
- Wet or unseasoned firewood: water in the wood keeps the fire cool and the smoke heavy
- Smoldering fires with the damper or air control closed down overnight
- A cold exterior chimney or an oversized flue that lets smoke cool before it exits
- Burning softwoods such as fir and hemlock, which carry more resin than hardwoods
- Restricted draft from a blocked cap, a nest, or a damper that does not open fully
- Skipped annual sweeps, so each season bakes onto the last

How It Works
Our chimney creosote removal process
Removal starts with staging. We look at the deposit on the damper and lower flue, then up the flue with a light and, when the texture is unclear from below, a camera. Flaky and dull is stage 1; crusty and shiny is stage 2; smooth, hard and tar-like is stage 3. We also check for signs of a past chimney fire, because heavy creosote that has already ignited often leaves cracked tiles behind. You get the stage, the method we propose, and a firm quote before we begin.
Stage the buildup
Visual and, if needed, camera check of the flue to classify the creosote as stage 1, 2 or 3 and to spot any liner damage.
Protect the room
Drop cloths, a sealed fireplace opening and a HEPA vacuum running for the whole job, whichever stage we are removing.
Remove with the matching method
Standard brushing for stage 1, rotary chain or whip heads for stage 2, chemical modifiers followed by mechanical removal for stage 3.
Clear the smoke chamber and shelf
Creosote collects on the corbeled ledges above the firebox as much as in the flue. We clean the chamber, shelf and damper.
Re-check and report
A second look up the flue to confirm what came off, plus a written note on what remains, liner condition, and how to slow the next buildup.

The stage decides the service. Here is how the three line up and what each one includes:
- Stage 1 removal: standard rotary or manual brushing with HEPA containment. This is what our sweep and inspection special starting at $299 covers. Read stage 1 cleaning.
- Stage 2 removal: rotary chain or whip heads that break the crunchy crust off the tile, more passes and more time. Read stage 2 cleaning.
- Stage 3 removal: chemical creosote modifiers that change the glaze so it can be scraped and brushed, sometimes over two or more visits. No one can guarantee complete removal of glaze. Read stage 3 cleaning.

- Liner evaluation: if a camera shows cracked tiles under the creosote, we quote liner repair separately.

Safety & Seattle Conditions
Safety considerations
Creosote is the fuel in almost every chimney fire. Stage 1 lights reluctantly, stage 2 burns readily, and stage 3 glaze burns hot enough to crack clay tiles and carry heat into the framing around the chimney. A chimney fire can be loud, with a roar and flames above the cap, or quiet and slow, burning for a while without anyone noticing. Either way the flue should not be used again until it has been inspected. NFPA 211 recommends an annual chimney inspection, and for a wood-burning fireplace that inspection is how the stage gets caught while it is still cheap to remove.
Leave all roof and chimney-top work to our certified and insured crew. Creosote removal chemicals, rotary tools and chimney-fire cleanup are not homeowner jobs.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Puget Sound fireplaces build creosote faster than the same fireplaces would in a dry climate. Sea-Tac's NOAA 1991–2020 normals put 40.34 inches of precipitation a year over roughly 150 to 156 days with measurable rain, with November the wettest month at 6.31 inches. Firewood stored through that kind of weather is rarely dry, and wet wood burns cool and smoky. Winter lows average 37.1°F in December and 37.7°F in January, so the exterior brick of a chimney stays cold and condenses smoke readily.
The region's housing adds to it. Seattle's median home was built in 1976 and Tacoma's in 1967, so many chimneys are unlined or clay-tile-lined masonry on an exterior wall, the coolest kind of flue and the one where creosote glazes fastest. Plan on staging the flue every year and removing what is there before the October through March burning season begins.

Chimney Creosote Removal FAQ
What are the three stages of creosote?
Stage 1 is dry, flaky soot that brushes off easily. Stage 2 is harder, shiny, crunchy flakes that need rotary chains or whips. Stage 3 is a smooth, hard tar glaze that standard tools cannot remove and that may need chemical treatment over several visits. Each stage burns hotter and is more expensive to remove than the one before, which is why we stage the flue before quoting.
How do I know which stage my chimney has?
Open the damper and look at the first few feet of flue with a flashlight. Dull and dusty points to stage 1. Shiny flakes or a crust that crunches points to stage 2. A smooth black coating that looks like dried tar or bubbled asphalt is stage 3. If the texture is not obvious, we check it with a camera during the free quote visit.
Is creosote removal the same as a chimney sweep?
A routine chimney sweep removes stage 1 creosote and normal soot. Creosote removal is the wider service that also covers stage 2 and stage 3, which need heavier tools, chemical modifiers and sometimes repeat visits. If your flue is at stage 1, the sweep and inspection special starting at $299 is all you need; heavier stages are quoted after we see the flue.
Can stage 3 glazed creosote be fully removed?
Often most of it, but not always all of it. Glaze bonds to clay tile, and the only way to change it is a chemical modifier that makes it brittle enough to scrape. That can take more than one visit. We never promise complete removal of glaze, and if the liner under it is cracked we may recommend relining instead of repeated treatments.
Why does my chimney build creosote so fast in Seattle?
Two reasons we see over and over. First, firewood stored outdoors through our 150-plus rainy days a year rarely gets dry, and wet wood burns cool and smoky. Second, many older Seattle and Tacoma chimneys are masonry on an exterior wall, which stays cold and condenses that smoke on the tile. Dry wood, hotter fires and an annual cleaning are the fixes.
What happens if creosote catches fire?
A chimney fire burns at a temperature high enough to crack flue tiles and warp metal liners, and it can spread heat into the framing around the chimney. If you hear a roar or see flames or heavy smoke at the cap, get everyone out and call 911. Do not use the fireplace again until the flue has had a camera inspection; see our chimney inspection page.
