An electric fireplace has no flue, no gas line and no combustion. What it does have is a heater element, a blower, a set of LEDs or bulbs with a motor-driven flame effect, a control board, and a remote or wall control. When one of those fails the fireplace either stops heating, goes dark, makes noise, or stops answering the remote. Those are the repairs this page covers, for plug-in inserts, built-in wall units, media-console fireplaces and electric log sets.
Electric units are often treated as disposable, and sometimes that is the right call: a failed control board on a discontinued unit may cost more to source than a new fireplace. But a worn blower, a burned-out heater element or a dead remote receiver is usually a straightforward part swap, and a built-in unit framed into a wall is a much bigger job to replace than to repair. We give you both numbers so you can decide.

Electric fireplace repairs are priced by the part, and the diagnosis tells us which apply:
- Heater repair: replacing a burned-out element or a tripped thermal cutoff, the usual fix when the flames work but no heat comes out.
- Blower service or replacement: cleaning a clogged fan cures most noise; a motor with worn bearings is replaced.
- Flame-effect repair: new LED strips or bulbs, a replacement rotisserie or drum, or a new effect motor for a display that is dark or stuck.
- Control and remote repair: new receiver, board or wall control when the unit ignores commands.
- Clean and tune: a full interior clean plus vent, cord and circuit check for a unit that runs but smells, cuts out or has not been opened in years.
- Replace instead: when the unit is discontinued, the board is unavailable, or the repair would cost close to a new fireplace of the same size, we say so and can remove the old unit and fit the new one, including a built-in wall unit.

Safety considerations
Electric fireplaces are low-risk compared with gas or wood, but they are still high-draw heaters. If the unit smells hot, trips the breaker, or shuts itself off, unplug it or switch its circuit off and leave it off until it has been checked; a shutdown is usually the overheat protection doing its job. Do not open the unit, bypass a thermal cutoff, or run it from an extension cord or power strip. Keep the intake and outlet vents clear of curtains, furniture and dust.
We do not touch gas. If your fireplace has a pilot or a gas valve, it is not electric; see gas fireplace repair, and if you ever smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Electric fireplaces are most common in the newer Puget Sound housing stock: Renton's median home dates to 1988, Redmond's to 1993, Gig Harbor's to 1998 and Port Orchard's to 1999, and many condos, townhomes and apartments built since then use an electric insert as the only fireplace in the home. Those units are now old enough for blowers and heater elements to wear out.
They also work hardest during the wet season. Sea-Tac's NOAA 1991-2020 normals put October through March at about 29.65 inches of precipitation, roughly 73% of the 40.34-inch annual total, with November the wettest month at 6.31 inches, and an electric fireplace used as daily supplemental heat through that stretch is most likely to fail when it is needed most.

Electric Fireplace Repair FAQ
My electric fireplace flames work but there is no heat. Can it be fixed?
Usually, yes. The flame effect and the heater are separate systems, so a dark heater with working flames almost always means a burned-out heater element, a tripped thermal cutoff, or a failed relay on the control board. Our technician tests which one with a meter and replaces it. Check first that the heat setting is actually on; some remotes run flames-only by default.
Why does my electric fireplace shut off after a few minutes?
That is normally the overheat sensor responding to heat that cannot escape: blocked intake or outlet vents, a blower clogged with dust, or a fan motor that has slowed. Less often the sensor itself has failed. Leave the unit off, and we will clean the airways, test the blower and sensor, and replace whichever part is at fault.
Is it worth repairing an electric fireplace or should I replace it?
It depends on the part and the unit. A blower, heater element, LED strip or remote receiver is a modest repair and worth doing, especially on a built-in unit framed into a wall. A failed control board on a discontinued model, or a cracked flame drum with no replacement available, often tips toward a new fireplace. Do you work on built-in electric fireplaces and wall units?
Yes. Built-in and recessed units are where repair makes the most sense, because replacing one means opening the wall or mantel. We service them in place through the access panel or by sliding the unit forward. If the unit has to come out, we handle the removal and refit, and tell you beforehand what that involves.
Why does my electric fireplace smell like burning?
A brief dusty smell the first time the heater runs each fall is normal. A persistent burning or hot-plastic smell is not: it points to dust packed on the heater element, a blower motor running hot, or a connection or cord that is overheating. Switch the unit off and have it checked; the fix is usually a thorough clean and sometimes a new blower or connection.
Do you service electric fireplaces the same day?
Often, yes. Cleaning, blower and heater element work, and remote receivers are usually finished on the first visit when the part is in stock.
