Tuckpointing (often called repointing) is a joint-only repair. We grind the failed mortar out of the joints to a set depth, clean the cavity, pack in fresh mortar in layers, and tool the joint to match the rest of the chimney. No bricks are replaced. It is the right service when the brick itself is sound but the mortar between the bricks has eroded, cracked, or turned to sand. Mortar is designed to be the part that wears out, and tuckpointing renews it before water gets deep enough to damage the brick.
The decision line matters. If bricks are spalling or loose, you need masonry repair, which replaces brick and relays courses. If joints are the only thing failing, tuckpointing is faster, cheaper and keeps every original brick in place, a real advantage on the older homes of Seattle, Tacoma, Shoreline and Edmonds where matching brick is hard.

How It Works
Our chimney tuckpointing process
We check every joint we can reach with a pick, because a joint that looks fine from the ground can be hollow behind the surface. We measure how deep the mortar has eroded, confirm the bricks are still hard and unspalled, and look at the crown and cap to find out why the joints got so wet in the first place. Your free written quote states how much of the chimney is being repointed, to what depth, and whether any bricks fall outside the tuckpointing scope.

Grind out the failed mortar
Joints are ground out with dust control to a uniform depth that gives the new mortar enough grip, without nicking the brick edges.
Clean and dampen
Dust and loose material are brushed out, and the joint is dampened so the brick does not pull the water out of the new mortar.
Pack in layers and tool
Mortar is pressed in firmly in layers so there are no voids, then tooled to the same profile as the existing joints so the repair blends in.
Cure, then protect
We let the mortar cure and recommend a breathable water repellent afterward so the fresh joints do not start eroding again the first wet season.

Tuckpointing is scoped by how much of the chimney needs it and how closely it needs to blend:
- Spot repointing: only the joints that have failed, typically the top few feet and the weather side.
- Full repoint above the roof: every joint on the exposed chimney is ground and repacked so the whole surface ages evenly. The usual choice when more than a scattered few joints have gone.
- Color and profile matching: we tint the mortar and tool the joint to match the existing work, which matters on a street-facing chimney or a period home.
- Tuckpointing plus crown work: joints rarely fail on their own. If the crown is cracked, we recommend crown repair or a crown rebuild (starting at $299) on the same visit.
- Tuckpointing plus waterproofing: once the mortar has cured, a breathable siloxane repellent keeps rain out of the fresh joints.
If the survey turns up spalled or loose brick, we will tell you tuckpointing alone is not enough and quote masonry repair instead.

Safety considerations
Grinding out joints is dusty, loud roof work. We control the dust and keep it out of your flue and your home, and we work from staging with fall protection. Please do not climb up to check your mortar; we inspect it for free and send photos.
Open joints can let flue gases into the brick and toward the house framing. If you smell smoke in rooms away from the fireplace, stop using it until the chimney has been inspected. NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection, which is when joint erosion is usually caught early.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Mortar joints in the Puget Sound fail from water, and there is a lot of it. Sea-Tac's normal annual rainfall is 40.34 inches, with November the wettest month at 6.31 inches and about 73% of the yearly total falling October through March. The Brick Industry Association notes that improperly filled mortar joints lead to leaky walls, and that water penetration followed by freezing and thawing causes cracking and disintegration. Seattle sees about 60 days a year that touch 32F with winter lows averaging around 37F, so wet joints freeze and thaw repeatedly instead of staying frozen.
Western Washington moss spreads fastest October through April on shaded surfaces, and on a chimney it lodges in open joints and holds water against them through the freeze-thaw months.

What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?
In everyday use around Seattle they mean the same thing: grinding out failed mortar and packing in new. Strictly, repointing is the repair itself and tuckpointing is a decorative version with a thin contrasting line. Whichever word you use, what we do is a full-depth joint repair tooled to match your chimney.
How do I know if I need tuckpointing or masonry repair?
Look at the brick faces. If they are flat and intact and only the mortar between them is recessed, cracked or crumbling, tuckpointing is the right job. If brick faces are flaking off, bricks are cracked through, or the top courses are loose, you need masonry repair. We confirm this with a probe on the free quote visit and quote the smaller job when it will hold.
Can you just smear new mortar over the old joints?
That is the repair that fails in a winter or two. A thin skim over eroded mortar has nothing to grip and pops off in the first freeze. Proper tuckpointing grinds the joint out to a set depth, cleans it, and packs new mortar in layers so it bonds to clean brick on three sides. It lasts many years instead of one.
Will the new mortar match the old?
We tint the mortar and tool the joint profile to match the existing chimney. Fresh mortar is a little lighter and sharper for the first year and then weathers in. On a full repoint above the roof the whole surface ages together, which is why we often recommend it over spot work on a visible chimney.
Will tuckpointing stop my chimney leak?
Only if the joints are where the water is getting in, and they are rarely the only place. A cracked crown or bad flashing will keep soaking the chimney no matter how good the joints are.
