A deep cleaning is what a chimney needs when one pass with a brush is not going to do it. It is the full-system job: the flue in repeated passes, the smoke chamber and smoke shelf, the damper and its frame, the firebox, and the connector pipe on a stove or insert, all done in one scheduled visit with the work area sealed and a HEPA vacuum running. We book it for two kinds of chimneys: the one that has not seen a fire in five, ten or twenty years, and the one that has been burned hard every winter and never serviced.
It is not the annual chimney sweep, which keeps a maintained flue maintained, and it is not the problem-specific chimney cleaning for a blockage or an odor. A deep cleaning assumes every part of the system is dirty and treats every part. If the buildup turns out to be glazed, we fold in the methods from our stage 3 creosote work and tell you so before we start.

How It Works
Our chimney deep cleaning process
Before the deep cleaning we look at the whole system, not just the flue. We check the firebox and damper, reach the smoke shelf, look up through the smoke chamber, and scope the flue with a camera when the history is unknown. We are looking for how thick the deposits are and what kind, because loose flakes, crunchy crust and hard glaze need different tools, and for anything the buildup is hiding: cracked tiles, open joints, a rusted damper, a missing cap. A chimney that sat unused for a decade often has more than dirt in it, and we would rather tell you that at the start than discover it halfway through.
Assess every component
Firebox, damper, smoke shelf, smoke chamber, flue and connector pipe are each checked so we know the tools and the number of passes before we begin.
Seal and contain
Drop cloths, a sealed fireplace opening and a HEPA vacuum running from the first pass to the last.
Flue in multiple passes
We brush or rotary-clean the flue top to bottom, then repeat until the walls stop giving up material. Heavy flues can take three or four passes.
Smoke chamber and shelf
The chamber walls and corbeled ledges are scrubbed with angled tools and the smoke shelf is cleared of everything that fell onto it over the years.
Damper, firebox and connector
The damper is freed and its frame cleaned so it seats; the firebox is scraped and vacuumed; a stove or insert connector pipe is disconnected, cleaned and reattached.

Repair and service options
A deep cleaning is quoted after we see the chimney, because the number of passes and the components involved vary. It can include:
- Full-system clean: flue, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper and firebox in one visit. This is the standard scope.
- Stove and insert add-on: disconnecting and cleaning the connector pipe, and pulling an insert when the flue cannot be reached otherwise.
- Glaze treatment: if the buildup is hard glaze rather than loose or crunchy deposits, we add the chemical modifier and tooling from our stage 3 cleaning, which may mean a second visit.
- Level 2 camera scan: recommended for any chimney with no service history; see Level 2 inspection.
- Follow-up repairs: a deep cleaning often uncovers a cracked liner, a failed damper or a missing cap. We quote those separately and never fold them into the cleaning price.
Our sweep-and-inspection special starts at $299 for a routine flue; a deep cleaning costs more because it is more work, and we say so up front. If you are not happy, we are not done, and we return at no charge.

Safety & Seattle Conditions
Safety considerations
Do not light a test fire in a chimney that has sat for years or has heavy buildup. Deposits that thick are fuel, and an idle flue may also be partly blocked by debris or a nest, which sends smoke and carbon monoxide into the house instead of up the chimney. Leave the chimney alone and call us. Our certified and insured crew handles all roof and chimney-top work, uses safe, green materials and HEPA filtration, and does not consider the job done until the system drafts properly.
NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection for any chimney in use, and a Level 2 inspection when a chimney is put back into service after a long idle period.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Puget Sound chimneys go idle and then get asked to work hard. A flue that sits through a wet season of about 29.65 inches of precipitation (October through March, NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Sea-Tac) without a good cap collects wet soot and debris, and then gets lit every evening once winter lows settle around 37°F in December and January.
The housing stock makes deep cleanings common here. Chimney Deep Cleaning FAQ
How is a deep cleaning different from a regular sweep?
A sweep cleans the flue of a maintained fireplace in one or two passes and checks the rest. A deep cleaning assumes every component is dirty: the flue gets as many passes as it needs, and the smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper, firebox and any connector pipe are each cleaned on their own. It takes longer and costs more, and it is the right call for a neglected or hard-used chimney.
My fireplace has not been used in fifteen years. Is a deep cleaning enough?
Usually it is the right first step, paired with a camera inspection. An idle flue collects debris, wet soot and sometimes nests, and it may hide cracked tiles or a rusted damper that nobody noticed. We clean the whole system, scope the liner, and tell you whether the chimney is ready to burn or needs a repair first. We do not light it until we know.
Do you clean the smoke chamber and smoke shelf as part of it?
Yes, both are included in every deep cleaning. The smoke shelf is where flakes from the flue pile up for years, and the smoke chamber's stepped ledges hold creosote that a straight flue brush passes right by. What if the buildup turns out to be glazed?
Then a brush will not remove it and we say so. Glaze is a hard, shiny tar layer that needs a chemical modifier and specialized tools, and sometimes a second visit. We identify it during the assessment, explain the change in scope and cost before continuing, and handle it the way we describe on our stage 3 creosote page. We do not pretend a glazed flue is clean after a brushing.
Can you deep clean a wood stove or insert system?
Yes. We disconnect the connector pipe, clean it and the flue above it, and pull the insert when that is the only way to reach the flue properly. Stoves and inserts run low and slow coat their pipe quickly, so the connector is often the dirtiest part. Reassembly and a draft check are part of the job.
How long does a chimney deep cleaning take?
Longer than a sweep, because every component gets its own attention and the flue gets repeated passes. A typical deep cleaning is a multi-hour visit, and a glazed flue or an insert that has to be pulled adds to that. We give you a time estimate with the free quote so you can plan the day.
